Where Should You Use Hydrophilic Waterstops?

What is a hydrophilic waterstop?

Hydrophilic waterstops are designed to create watertight seals in concrete construction joints by expanding when exposed to moisture. They are ideal for applications where water infiltration is a concern and traditional sealing methods may not fully seal irregular gaps.

Common Applications

  • Poured-in-place concrete joints
  • Precast concrete structures
  • Sanitary and storm sewer manholes
  • Septic tanks and containment systems
  • Below-grade structures exposed to groundwater

When NOT to Use Hydrophilic Waterstops

Dry or controlled environments → Use Crete-Stik

Fuel or hydrocarbon exposure → Use EX 221

Surface-to-surface sealing → Use Butyl Tape

External wrap or reinforced protection needed → Use Strap Wrap

When Hydrophilic Waterstops Work Best

You should use hydrophilic waterstops when:

  • Water infiltration is expected or likely
  • Sealing cold joints between concrete pours
  • Surfaces may be uneven or irregular
  • A water-activated sealing solution is needed
